At the age of 14, Doty was apprenticed to a local shopkeeper, Jacob Settle, Jr., "to learn the art, trade, and mystery, or occupation of a merchant." His apprenticeship contract was for six and a half years, but Doty left for the Reformed Church in Berne, being moved to become a missionary, at the age of 19. (Alexander, p.359)
